Data ScienceUndergraduate Data Science
Bachelor of Arts · Natural Sciences · Area of concentration or secondary field
What you study
Data Science combines computing, statistics and mathematics. Students develop foundations in programming, databases, data preparation and quantitative methods before studying statistical models, algorithms, distributed computing, software engineering and machine learning.
Independent work
The area of concentration culminates in a senior thesis. Students can pursue a data science question in a domain of interest or develop an interdisciplinary area with faculty supervision.
Courses and requirements
Recent offerings include:
- Applied Machine Learning
- Algorithms
- Distributed Computing
- Distributed Systems
Consult the undergraduate catalog and your faculty adviser for concentration and secondary-field requirements.

Sports Analytics
Apply statistics, mathematics and computer science to questions about sports. New College has announced a Sports Analytics track within the Data Science area of concentration and a Sports Analytics secondary field, with Prof. Andrey Skripnikov as the program contact.
Data Science AOC: Sports Analytics track
12.5 units: 8.5 core + 4 track. Combine the Data Science core with the Sports Analytics course and seminar, advanced electives and sports analytics thesis research. An internal or external internship is optional.
Sports Analytics secondary field
6 units. The secondary field (minor) includes statistics, programming and databases, the Sports Analytics course and seminar, and one advanced elective. Examples include machine learning, time series, visualization or distributed computing.
New courses
- Sports Analytics Seminar — Spring 2027, 0.5 unit. Prerequisite: Dealing with Data 1 (Intro Stats) or Probability 1. Offered at least once a year.
- Sports Analytics Course — Fall 2027. Both Dealing with Data 1 and Dealing with Data 2 are required; Probability 1 may be taken alongside the course. Plan ahead by taking Dealing with Data 2 in Spring 2027. The course will be offered yearly.
What you will study
Work with real sports data, including player tracking, to analyze player and team performance; compare strategies and decisions; build performance metrics; evaluate draft prospects and predict future performance; and group players and teams by style of play.
